Skirmish at the Grotto
24 May 2016 – 22:30
The wind howled, and the waves crashed against the foreshore as Anni and Abigail, even injured as she was, made their way down the creaking, old stairs to Fishgut’s lair.
After clearing the Grotto bar of its usual patrons, the two mages had been informed that their quarry rented a room beneath the business. Now, as they slowly descended into the darkness below, all that stood between them and their prize was a plain wooden door.
Abigail gave the door handle a cautious twist and confirmed what they might have suspected: the door had been locked from the inside. Unfortunately, that same twist triggered a latent spell which sent an arc of green energy arcing up Abigail’s arm, causing her flesh to blacken and blister as she cried out in pain.
With the element of surprise now lost, Anni used her magic to forcefully kick the door open. A small explosion of green energy accompanied the action, as the ward Abigail encountered harmless discharged itself. The two mages then saw Fishgut crush something between his gnarled hands as a wave of nausea overcame them.
Barely holding back the urge to start vomiting, Abigail fired several shots at the Brineborn, only to have him avoid them with inhuman speed. Then, as Anni lunged at him, Fishgut summoned forth a burst of water that shattered the floorboards between them. He then dove into the water, disappearing beneath the waves.
At that point, Abigail turned and went upstairs and ran into Tony and Chris. Meanwhile, Anni grabbed what she could from Fishgut’s desk, noticing crude, twisted runes scratched into the woodwork all about the room. Leaving nothing to chance, she ripped apart the room with a kinetic blast and went upstairs.
- Anni. May 24, 2016: We finally find Fishgut, only to have him flee through the floorboards into the damn water. Found some stuff from his office though, will be checking into that to see what I can use. Begin investigation “Fishgut’s Papers”.
Madness in the Streets
24 May 2016 – 23:00
Despite her protests, it was clear that Abigail was in need of medical attention. With that in mind, the group took her to the nearest emergency hospital. Unfortunately, the emergency department was overflowing with patients, many injured by random attacks on the streets as the frenzied violence neared their crescendo.
While they waited for Abigail to receive treatment, the group discussed their next move. According to Anni, Fishguts’ notes marked out several locations along the shoreline of Elliot Bay, any or all of which could be related to the Cult’s rituals.
Agreeing that they needed transport, Chris and Anni reached out to their respective contacts. Chris managed to get in touch with a local goods smuggler, Daniel Oakley, who offered to take them across as a favour to Chris.
However, while Chris was informing the others of this turn of events, Anni was speaking to her contact, Lt Oswald, who overheard Oakley’s name. Oswald offered to organise transport for Anni and her group if she helped him arrest Oakley.
Anni said she’d consider it before hanging up and asking Chris how soon they could meet the smuggler.
- Anni. May 24, 2016: Have the chance to get a free ride on a ship with a captain crazy enough to take us. Cops want him for something, probably just give him over to them after we complete the task at hand. Wins all around.
Captain Oakley, Master of the Seven Seas!
24 May 2016 – 23:30
The group met their prospective captain and his boat at a small, out-of-the-way dock. After nearly crashing his ship against the wharf, the daring Captain Oakley introduced himself and his first mate, a young girl named Whistle.
He said he didn’t much care why they wanted to travel in this weather, but they’d likely be hard pressed to find someone else crazy enough to make the trip given the current conditions. Begrudgingly agreeing, the group accepted his offer and jumped aboard the small, rickety boat.
- Anni. May 24, 2016: A ride in a hellish storm in a rickety boat, this is seeming to be more and more of a bad idea. If this is what passes as a successful criminal, I am confused why the police are having so much trouble.
